July 5, 2018 (hornnews24.net) – Somalia has signed today a fishing deal with a Chinese fishing company to conduct fishing activities in Somalia for one year.
The Somali minister for natural resources and Fishing Abdirahman Mohamed Abdi Hashi signed the agreement for the Somali side while Mr. Davy Chen signed the agreement for the Chinese company.
Speaking to journalists shortly after the signing ceremony, the Somali minister stated that the Somali leaders will visit China in the following months without giving details.
Puntland county governor, Abdi Wali Gas had signed a similar agreement with Chinese company in 2016 when he visited China that year.
Having depleted the seas close to home, Chinese fishermen are sailing farther to exploit the waters of other countries, their journeys often subsidized by a government more concerned with domestic unemployment and food security than the health of the world’s oceans and the countries that depend on them.
Chinese fishing vessels prowl the waters off Somalia. China is catching million of tons of fish too young or small for human consumption every year, exacerbating the country’s over-fishing problem and potentially decimating fish stocks.
